Privacy Policy

Keno ("we," "us," "the App") is a hyper-local event-sharing app for university students. This policy explains what information we collect, why, and what control you have over it.

Who we are

Keno is operated by Alex Tamp (keno.app.official@gmail.com). For any privacy question or request, contact us at that address.

Information we collect

Account information, provided when you sign up:

• Name
• University email address
• University name and department
• Password (stored securely by our authentication provider — we never see it in plain text)

Profile information, which you may optionally add:

• Bio
• Profile photo
• Interests (used to personalize your event feed)
• An emergency contact name and phone number, used only by the in-app safety button during a live event you've checked into, which lets you send that contact a pre-filled text message or call 112 — we don't contact them ourselves or use this information for anything else

Identity verification. University email verification is the default way to confirm you're a student. If that isn't available to you, you can instead upload a photo of a student or government ID as a fallback — this photo is stored securely, visible only to you and to app administrators reviewing the verification request, and is never shown to other users.

Content you create, including:

• Events you create (title, description, category, location, date/time, cover photo)
• Messages you send in event chats, group chats, and direct messages
• Comments and reactions on events
• Photos you upload to an event's photo wall
• Reports you submit about other users or events

Location data. If you grant permission, we use your device's location to show you nearby events on the map and to filter your feed by distance. We do not track or store your location history — only your position at the moment you use these features.

Usage and social data, generated as you use the app:

• Events you've joined, saved, or created
• People you follow and who follows you
• Group memberships
• XP, level, and attendance streaks (used for the app's gamification features)
• A push notification token, if you allow notifications, used to deliver alerts (e.g. new followers, event updates)

Calendar access. If you choose to add an event to your device calendar, we write that single event to your calendar via your device's OS. We do not read or store the rest of your calendar.

How we use your information

We use your information to:

• Operate the core features of the app (creating and joining events, messaging, following)
• Personalize your feed based on your interests and location
• Send you notifications you've opted into
• Enforce our community guidelines (via user reports and content filtering)
• Maintain the security and integrity of the service

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

Who we share it with

• Other users. Your name, university, profile photo, bio, and any content you post (events, messages, comments) are visible to other users of the app as intended by the app's social features. Direct messages are only visible to the two participants in that conversation.
• Service providers. We use Google Firebase (authentication, database, file storage, and push notification delivery) and Expo (push notification routing) to run the app. These providers process data on our behalf under their own security and privacy commitments, and do not use your data for their own purposes.
• Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety of our users.

We do not share your data with advertisers or data brokers.

Data retention

We keep your account and content for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account (Settings → Delete Account), your profile and personal data are permanently removed. Content you've posted that is inherently shared with others (e.g. messages already sent, comments on events) may not be fully removable from other users' views, consistent with how messaging and social features generally work.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (including under the EU/UK GDPR, which applies to users in Greece and the wider EU), you have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate data (most profile fields are editable directly in the app)
• Delete your account and associated data (available directly in Settings)
• Object to or restrict certain processing, such as location-based features (you can deny or revoke location/notification permissions at any time in your device settings)
• Data portability — request a copy of your data in a portable format

Children's privacy

Keno is intended for university students and requires a university email address to register. It is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Security

We use industry-standard practices to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and access-controlled databases. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information appropriately.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
